Hammock-swaying Marari Beach is perfect for long walks and lazy afternoons thanks to mile upon mile of clean white sands, whispering coconut trees, turquoise sea and colourful butterflies.
Pick up a book, drink in hand, and sit back beneath the shade of a silent palm. This was certainly our preferred activity when we first stumbled upon the paradise of Mararikulam.
This beautiful fishing village is an hour down the road from Kochi and just north of Alleppey, in the district of Alappuzha. After a busy tour of Kerala, it’s ideally located and the perfect place to stop and recharge.
Mararikulam is a century-old, tranquil village, and a quieter alternative to the more popular beaches to the south. The village itself is authentic and peaceful and many of the locals still make their money from fishing.
The deity Marari, or Lord Siva, is responsible for the name Mararikulam, and the impressive Mararikulam Mahadeva is an important and ancient Shiva temple, and well worth a visit.
When in Mararikulam you really do realise the sheer diversity of Kerala. Not too far away you’ll find the colourful city of Kochi, mountains and rolling green tea plantations and the mesmerisingly beautiful backwaters, but to end your stay, this sleepy spot provides the perfect getaway.
